Suicide law in UK ‘would lead to 1000 deaths a year’

Public policy research organisation Living and Dying Well released a report recently which suggests that if a British version of the 1997 Oregon Death With Dignity Act is adopted, cases of assisted suicide would rise each year and most would not involve the terminally ill but the elderly.

The report is likely to spark considerable debate, and, should it be seriously considered, is likely to lead to more complicated probate issues, involving legal battles over existing Wills versus any amended Wills. It is obvious of course that some concern will be centered around the question of the person’s sanity at the time that the Will changes were made.

The paper was delivered last week to parliamentarians in Westminster and Edinburgh, as dedicated campaigners renew their efforts to change the law on voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Regardless of the outcome, it remains essential that you have a Will prepared by a professional, to ensure that your wishes are followed to the letter and that the correct beneficiaries will collect the proceeds of your Estate. You should ensure that you use a fully professional registered will writing and probate company which provides a sympathetic and personal service to suit your needs, with a duty of care to ensure the advice given is accurate and appropriate.
